Wien 2002-08-01 Welcome to the FTW xDSL simulation tool! This the version 2.3.2 of the FTW xDSL simulation tool. Please look in doc/Simulation_Tool.html for general documentation and WhatsNew for information of what has changed since previous version. This simulation tool aims to support the evolving standardization process of xDSL. The objective of the simulation tool is to concentrate the knowledge of xDSL simulations from standardization work and FSAN results into one simulation package to facilitate evaluation of various xDSL proposals and scenarios. In the future FTW (Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien, Austria) will serve as support for the tool and will release bug fixes and function as coordinator for the simulator future developments. Already in this version of the simulator FTWs broad interest in all xDSL technologies is shown with a much enhanced support for other xDSL technologies besides VDSL, for example, ADSL and SDSL. A number of scenarios (specific topologies and traffic patterns) are implemented and the FSAN noise models are directly available in this tool. Five of the suggested VDSL power back-off methods are also implemented. The performance of ADSL, SDSL, and VDSL as well as its impact on existing services (in particular ADSL, which is FEXT limited) can be evaluated. Besides the predefined FSAN scenarios and models it is possible for the user to define their own scenarios, noise models, various noise levels, and spectral masks. The tool have now also the possibility to simulate various forms of line-code dependent things. When REFERRING to this simulator (The FTW xDSL simulator or the FSAN xDSL simulator)) no files in the xdslcomm and xdsldefs directories should be changed. When referring to simulations done with this simulator the main simulations files must be made available upon request to anyone asking for them. That is, anyone should be able replicate any simulations referring to this simulator by putting the main files into their simulator and redo the experiments for themselves. Due to the random and large variations in behavior of these networks, it can not be guaranteed that these assumptions are realistic for real access networks.
